Marvel Comic Books - How it All Began

Marvel Comic Books - How it All Began

By Astra Yaddira

Marvel comic books contain some of the most iconic fictional characters today. With the recent surge in the number of superhero movies, Marvel characters have dominated the big screen, prompting many people to look into the story behind Marvel.

Marvel comics' first incarnation, Timely comics, published Marvel comics #1 in October of 1939. This issue covered the first appearance of Namor the sub-mariner and an android known as the human torch (different from the human torch of the fantastic four). Today, this issue is valued at $330,000 - a definite nod towards its significance in comic-book culture today. The founder of Marvel comics was Martin Goodman.

In 1941, Goodman's relative, Stanley Lieber, was hired as the interim editor of the company. You might not recognize his name, but during that time, Lieber was already writing under the pseudonym "Stan Lee". Stan Lee is a major force behind Marvel comic books, creating some of the brands best-known characters to date.

Sales declined suring the post- World War 2 years. This was a result of superhero comics going out of fashion. Because fo this, Marvel (then Atlas Comics) shifted to different genres and storylines which appealed to the public. Genres included horror, action, adventure, romance, comedy, etc.

However, the 1960's showed a huge revival in the popularity of superheroes, started by DC's Justice League of America. Marvel comic books followed this success with Stan Lee's creation, The Fantastic Four.

Soon, Marvel comics gave birth to all new heroes, such as Spider-man, The Hulk, Iron man, Daredevil, and the X-men. Despite the competition, Marvel was able to establish itself as one of the largest comic book companies in the world -a position it still holds today.

What made Marvel comic books so distinctive is the fact that they devoted a lot more effort to developing the characters. Readers are able to see flaws in the characters and are able to enjoy the storyline much better because of those flaws.

This method of storytelling has caused marvel comic books to revolutionize the industry and capture the imaginations of millions worldwide. Truly, the way Marvel comic books have evolved is awe-inspiring.

Female Comic Book Characters and What They Mean to Comics

Female Comic Book Characters and What They Mean to Comics

By Virgil Vince

Early female comic book characters were limited to supporting roles or used as damsels in distress. They were the Lois Lanes and Lana Langs; characters that mattered to a certain extent, but not as much as the male leads. But since comics were primarily marketed to the male population, this was acceptable and expected.

With the role of women becoming more prominent in society in later years, though, more and more female comic book characters took on larger roles, like Wonder Woman and Hawkgirl. These women were not simply supporting characters, but lead characters who took a backseat to no one as they trail blazed the way for the future of female comic book characters.

In modern times, female comic book characters are as diverse and plentiful as their male counterparts. Whether in the superhero genre or various other genres, more and more women characters are seen every day. This is especially the case in Manga, the Japanese comic book form, and Anime, it's television equal. The bulk of these stories are primarily targeted towards a female audience and thus feature lead female comic book characters like Cardcaptor Sakura.

Traditionally, superhero comics with female leads have been hard sells for whatever reason. Many heroines have had their own series only to be canceled after only a few issues. There are a few exceptions, though, like Birds of Prey, a DC Comics book that features a team of female comic book characters fighting crime, which has lasted well over 100 issues. And Marvel Comics' Spider-Girl, featuring Spider-Man's daughter, May Parker, which was saved from cancellation three times thanks to fan support.

In the early 2000s, Crossgen Comics also created several books with strong female leads, like Sojourn, Meridian and Crux, that forced other companies to take another look at their own female comic book characters. Today, Ms. Marvel and Catwoman are both doing well with their own titles, and Image's Bomb Queen has had several mini-series and continues to carry a strong fan base. And when mentioned female comic book characters, one can't forget Aspen Comics' Aspen Matthews and her book Fathom, which became popular in the 90s and still has a strong following even though it's not currently producing many issues.

The rise of strong female comic book characters, especially in superhero comics, is obviously intended to extend the audience beyond the typical target market, giving female readers something to relate to as well. And with female characters stepping up even in male dominated team books, like Emma Frost and Storm in the X-Men books, should comic companies continue to cater to this growing audience it should reach its goal. And more readers for comics is always a good thing for the medium.

How to Draw Japanese Manga Anime

How to Draw Japanese Manga Anime

By Edwin M Clark

Japanese Manga is no longer considered a pop culture. It has established a foothold in the mainstream entertainment media. You can find such evidence in media outlets such as movies, television and books. Today Japanese Manga is not lumped together in the same category such as cartoons and kid's shows. You have American cutesy cartoons such as Tom and Jerry and then there are adventure packed, often bloody animations such as Akira. Japanese Manga can be graphic and violent. And it can be cute and non violent. If you've watched enough Manga and have become a true fan than maybe you've felt that urge in your hands to pick up a pencil and draw. If that has happened then you are not alone. Japanese Manga has excited and thrilled a new generation of young talented artist and potential Manga masters.

Japanese Manga has many different styles just like traditional paintings. Certain Manga characteristics have exaggerated physical proportions such as large heads, short legs and arms with a squat torso to bring everything together. This Manga drawing style is called "Chibi". You can find examples of Chibi drawings from the popular animated series "Naruto". And some are perfectly proportioned as if they were actual human beings.

Then there are the more upscale Manga animations such as the popular movie "Appleseed". In this animation you will find the characters are drawn more realisticly with a certain Manga flair. After all if we'd want to watch actual humans we would watch a live film. Though the movie "Akira" was done through Computer Generated Imagery (CGI), the underlying details are all still filled with Manga style and essence.

Here are the physical attributes that Manga characters possess:

Hair - The hair is usually suped up like a lot of gel has been applied. One big tip about drawing hair is to shape the character's skull first. Many first timers draw the hair without first sketching out the foundation of the skull. By working from the skull up you can have a better idea of how the hair should look and fall into place.

Eyes - The eyes are the windows of the soul. It is possible to draw the eyes to show more emotions than the face. Manga characters have larger than life eyes. You will also notice that the eyes are more animated so that emotions can be revealed. Though Manga characters are in general Asian, they do not possess Asian features.

Arms, Legs and Body - Again Manga characters can come in all shapes and sizes. If you watch the Manga series like "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure" you will see how exaggerated the character's body frame is. Usually the action genre of Manga will have characters with outrageous muscles bulging from everywhere possible. But many times Manga character's physical attributes belie their true powers and abilities. This gives Manga series tension and drama. Nothing is better to watch then an under dog hero defeat a much more powerful opponent.

Costume and Clothes - Some people may consider what a Manga character wears is useless detail but I strongly disagree. What a character wears defines who the character is. Much like a live film. Costumes give heroes their coolness factor. We all know most super heroes may have muscles underneath, but without a costume there is just nothing else to extend about the Manga character's origin and personality.

Which ever types of Manga you want to draw, the best things to do is to learn from watching or reading your favorite Manga series. Try to emulate your favorite Manga artist's characters. Those are the best places to start on your drawing journey. Practice drawing Manga and reading more is the best way to learn how to draw Japanese Manga.
